About the cooking converter

Recipes mix volume (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons) and weight (grams). The two only line up once you know what you're measuring, because density differs: a US cup of all-purpose flour is about 120 g, while a cup of granulated sugar is about 200 g. This converter applies the right density for each ingredient, using US customary cups (236.6 ml).

Questions

Are US or metric cups used?

US customary cups (236.6 ml). For metric recipes, convert to millilitres or grams instead.

Why do I need to pick an ingredient?

Only for volume ↔ weight conversions. A cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh different amounts, so the ingredient sets the density used.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
